Our Beliefs

Here at FBC, we may change our method, but we will never change our message.  Our message is based on the following beliefs:

AUTHORITY

The Bible is the written word of God and the supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. Jesus, Son of God, is the criterion by which the Bible is to be interpreted.

John 1:18 No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known. . . . John 5:39 You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify on my behalf. . . . 2 Timothy 3:14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, 15 and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

Exodus 24:4; Deuteronomy 4:1-2; 17:19; Joshua 8:34; Psalm 19:7-10; 119:11, 89, 105, 140; Isaiah 34:16; 40:8; Jeremiah 15:16; 36; Matthew 5:17-18; 22:29; Luke 21:33; 24:44-46; John 5:39; 16:13-15; 17:17; Acts 2:16 -39; 17:11; Romans 15:4; 16:25-27; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-2; 4:12; 1 Peter 1:25; 2 Peter 1:19-21

GOD

The one God, creator and sovereign of heaven and earth, is revealed in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! . . . Revelation 1:8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. . . . Mark 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.

HUMAN BEINGS

God loves all human beings and intends that we live – with God and with each other – authentically, joyfully, and eternally.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

Genesis 1:26-31; Psalm 1; 8:3-6; Acts 17:26-31; Romans 5:6; 1 Corinthians 1:21-31; Ephesians 1:3-6

SIN

All human beings, in multiple ways and at various times, reject God’s holy love and attempt to create life of, for, and by ourselves — an attempt which results in disruption of relations to God and to others, dissolution of the human self, and, finally, death.

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. . . . Romans 3:23 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God . . . . Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death . . . .

Genesis 3; Psalm 51:1-5; Isaiah 6:5; Romans 1:19-32; Ephesians 2:1-3

SALVATION

In Jesus, God acts to rescue all human beings from the power and fatal end of sin and, as we trust and obey Jesus, to re-create us for life – with God and with each other.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God —  9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast. . . . 2 Corinthians 5:17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! . . . 1 John 1:7 If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Exodus 6:2-8; Matthew 16:21-26; John 1:29; 12:44-50; Romans 3:22-26; 5:6-8; 6:6; 7:14-25; 8:10-14; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21; Colossians 1:21-23; 3:9-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; 9:12-15; 1 Peter 3:18

JESUS

Jesus – Son of God, wholly God and wholly human – lived a sinless life, died as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all human beings, was buried, arose bodily from the grave, and ascended into heaven, where he reigns as Lord.

Philippians 2:5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Isaiah 53; Matthew 27:22 – 28:6; John 1:29; 20; Acts 2:22-24, 32-33, 36; Hebrews 1:1-4; 7:25-26; 12:2; 1 Peter 2:21-25; 3:22; Revelation 5:9-14; 19:16

HOLY SPIRIT

The Spirit of God acts on, within, and through human beings to convince us of our need for God, enable our embrace of Jesus as Lord, guide us into truth, energize our worship, empower our witness, and assure our eternal relationship with God and God’s community.

John 16:7 It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. . . . 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. . . .

John 14:16-17, 26; Romans 8:9-11, 14-16, 26-27; 15:13; 1 Corinthians 2:10-14; 3:16; 6:19; 12:3-11; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22; 3:17; 5:1-5; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 1:13-14; 2 Timothy 1:14; 2 Peter 1:21; 1 John 4:13

PERSONHOOD IN JESUS

To trust and obey Jesus is to embrace life in relationship with God, a relationship which is marked by trusting intimacy and obedient service.

John 1:12 To all who received [Jesus], who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God. . . .

COMMUNITY IN JESUS

To trust and obey Jesus is to embrace life in God’s community, through whom God announces to the world the good news about Jesus and shapes human beings for authentic and eternal life.

John 20:21 Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. . . . 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. . . . Ephesians 4:15 Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love. . . . 1 Peter 2:17 Love the family of believers.

HISTORY

God will bring history to completion: Jesus will return to judge all human beings and to establish God’s eternal kingdom.

John 14:1 Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And you know the way to the place where I am going. . . . 2 Corinthians 5:10 For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil.
